PURE GOLD Seth's Blog: Things to ask before you redo your website

  • What is the goal of the site?
  • In other words, when it's working great, what specific outcomes will occur?
  • Who are we trying to please? If it's the boss, what does she want? Is impressing a certain kind of person important? Which kind?
  • How many people on your team have to be involved? At what level?
  • Who are we trying to reach? Is it everyone? Our customers? A certain kind of prospect?
  • What are the sites that this group has demonstrated they enjoy interacting with?

    I pulled out the top three first questions - in my regard - for anyone who "just wants it done," good luck - the research and strategy is THE #1 most important part.

    Designers alone don't implicitly understand what works and what doesn't - they cannot, in fact, because that is totally 100% Determined by your field, and the needs, wants, habits of your ever-so-particular target audience.

    The more you understand who they are and what they're doing, the better you'll be able to execute the mechanisms required to have them get interested and get to want what you have to offer. Period.

    A decent design naturally follows, if it doesn't get in the way...
