» we are not consumers :mnmlist

There’s a tendency, even among those who are trying to buy less stuff, to call everyone “consumers”. The company needs to please its consumers … we consumers need to vote with our dollars … we need watchdogs to protect consumers … consumers are buying less during the recession.

Let’s stop that. We are not consumers.

We’re people.

When we allow ourselves to be branded with these types of corporate terms, we’ve given in to the consumerist mindset. We’ve allowed the debate to be framed around buying: should we buy organic or local? How can we protect consumers? Do consumers have rights? What’s the best way to spend our money on products? How can we be savvy consumers? How can we affect change in society by making ethical or conscious buying choices?

What about the question of whether we should be buying or not? That gets thrown out the window, because it’s already assumed in the term: we’re consumers. Of course we buy. It’s just a matter of how, how much, where, from whom, how often.

But if we stop thinking of ourselves as consumers, and start calling ourselves “people”, then we open up the question. Should we even buy in the first place? Is it possible to live a life without buying?

The heart-quenching stream and the little dude on the corner

This is the second in my series of things that go good together. Good is relative :) - the connecting thread here is purpose. What drives you, what motivates you, what makes it all worthwhile?

Have you asked yourself lately? The little dude springs from an artist's imagination in action. He exudes plastic emptiness, yet his empty kitsch nature brings joy to some, and presumably the joy of profit to others.

The stream flows with pure spirit - effortless joyful awareness - it's alive with the essence of itself.

Which one resembles the life you lead. Which one is closer to the life you strive for? Does it make a difference?

Think about it. You might be suprised at your answer.

-- but you have to ask yourself first.

Quiet mountain and the old boots left behind

Isn't it grand... old quiet mountain with a fresh snow cover. Snow doesn't advertise its services - yet I might like to eat some anyway... :)

The man left his boots and kept the laces. Worn beyond use, he couldn't bear throw them out. What else has he left behind in this life I wonder...

Seth's Blog: High praise indeed

The best thing to say to an artist of any kind might be, "someday, people will think what you did is really important."

If it's popular with everyone right away, it might not be art, it might just be good marketing. But if it earns attention and respect over time, if it wins over the skeptical, then you've really created something.

A cabbage fresh from the patch is truly a glorious thing

As the growers market reopens, the smell and gleam of honest, passionate and joyful work shines through and melts the frost of our ever more mechanized and commerce-exchange based "normal" lives.

And the world keeps on turning.

Oh comfort and joy, you hide in unforeseen places...

Seth's Blog: You rock

You rock

This is deceptive.

You don't rock all the time. No one does. No one is a rock star, superstar, world-changing artist all the time. In fact, it's a self-defeating goal. You can't do it.

No, but you might rock five minutes a day.
